In our work with SEKVENS, we wanted to create a watch for those who want a little more than a fashion watch. A watch for those who appreciate a cool Scandinavian design and high quality.

There are lots of cool fashion watches on the market today. But the material quality often leaves a lot to be desired. Here are a few examples:

  • The leather straps can be made of “genuine leather”, which often consists of glued leather shavings and usually comes from the “cheaper” layers of the leather.
  • The front glass of the watch can be made of mineral glass (in the worst case, plexiglass) and is easily scratched, and is also not very resistant to impacts.
  • In the most extreme cases, the indicators/indices on the dial are glued on and can fall off over time.

These are just examples, but try to keep an eye on the watches that are sold in the $200–$350 price range. It’s rare to find one where at least one of the above points does not apply.

In our opinion, it ought to be possible to do it better.

When approaching the design of SEKVENS, our mission was clear: To include all the good materials and exclude the bad. All the while offering a watch at a price that most people can afford.

Here is a list of some of the quality components we have equipped SEKVENS with:

  • A leather strap in genuine Italian full-grain leather, from the top layer of the leather – not from split, glued leather or similar.
  • An automatic movement from Japanese SEIKO (SII) – the NH35A.
  • Case made of 316L surgical-grade stainless steel.
  • Applied hour/minute indices (meaning that the indices are anchored to the dial with pins)
  • Scratch resistant double-domed sapphire glass crystal on the front and sapphire crystal back.
  • 5 ATM water resistance.

All wrapped up in a modern, tailor-made Scandinavian design.

But wait, the story does not end here…

As you can see from the list above, we have chosen to use sapphire crystal for the front and back of the watch.

Sapphire crystal – or sapphire glass – is made synthetically and is only surpassed by diamonds in its hardness. It is extremely difficult to scratch and withstands impacts and shocks much better than traditional mineral glass, and it is the preferred type of glass/crystal for watches.

But did you know that there are also different quality levels/types of sapphire crystal? The difference lies in the sapphire crystal’s form/profile. And now it’s going to get nerdy 😉

The most commonly used profiles are:

• Flat profile
• Single-domed profile
• Double-domed profile

1: Flat profile
The most regular type is sapphire crystal with a flat profile – where the glass on the front of the watch is just “flat”.

2: Single-domed profile
Next is the so-called “single dome”, where the sapphire crystal is curved on the outside but still flat on the inside. This type of sapphire crystal has an exclusive look. Unfortunately, the internal, flat profile combined with the outer curved profile makes the glass a kind of prism/lens. This can cause the dial to be distorted to look at – a bit like looking through a magnifying glass.

3: Double-domed profile
For SEKVENS, we’ve chosen to use the most exclusive type – namely the third type of sapphire crystal, which has the “double-dome” profile.

For sapphire crystal with the double-dome profile, the glass is curved on both the outside and the inside. Because the glass is curved on both sides, you avoid the “magnifying glass” effect and thus you get the best of both worlds: An exclusive look and no optical distortions of the dial.

In addition, we have chosen to treat the glass with an anti-reflective coating, which means that the dial can be seen clearly – also when used outdoors. The anti-reflective coating is of course on the inside of the watch so that it doesn’t mist up, e.g. when using soap. And if the outer part of the glass becomes damaged, the damage can usually be polished away without the anti-reflective coating wearing away.

We thought that was smart.

Full-grain leather straps

Our straps come from Tuscany in Italy and are made of the finest aniline leather, which gives a fantastic depth of colour and character.

At the same time, the leather comes from the top layer of the skin and thus maintains its natural surface structure, making each strap unique. This layer of leather is also incredibly comfortable, flexible and durable.

The leather on our straps undergoes an organic process called vegetable tanning. Vegetable tanning is a natural dyeing process in which the leather is treated with different types of bark and roots, which contain tannic acid (also known as “tannin”). Everyday plants such as vegetables, root vegetables, chestnuts and the like are used, depending on which colour the leather will be. The tanning process often takes a long time, as long as 2 months.

Vegetable tanning is an ancient process that we here in Denmark can trace all the way back to the Viking Age, when the Vikings tanned the leather with everything from bark, ash, elm and hazel.

We have chosen to use vegetable tanning for the dyeing of our straps, rather than chrome tanning, which is usually the fastest (and most used) method, but which often uses harmful chemicals such as chromium, formaldehyde, etc.

It has been important and essential for us to avoid the use of chromium tanning – both because of the use of the potentially harmful chemicals, but also because of the process itself, where the waste product is extremely harmful to the environment and as is in some parts of the world tipped into lakes, streams and the like.

We have produced the straps in 5 different colours, so you can choose exactly the strap that suits your outfit. The colour of the strap makes a huge difference to the way SEKVENS looks. Just see below:

Save 20%

When you buy SEKVENS, a strap in an optional colour is included. With the 6 variants of SEKVENS that we offer, combined with the 5 different strap colours, you can create the look that suits you – and your style.

We recommend that you buy an extra strap with your watch – in that way, you get more opportunities to vary your look.

If you buy an extra strap at the same time as you buy your watch, we give you a 20% discount on the extra strap.

Glad to see another Scandinavian brand taking on the watch business. Perfect size for my wrist - not too large or small. I love the fact that you can see the movement through the back.
